Why Did Diebold Nixdorf Turn to 3D Printing?

At first glance, 3D printing might not seem directly related to banking, but it has become an essential tool in Diebold’s R&D and production processes. The company selected the INTAMSYS FUNMAT PRO 610HT to meet its need for large parts and multi-material production, including engineering plastics, composite materials, and high-performance materials. This choice enabled Diebold’s manufacturing team to quickly produce prototypes—both conceptual and functional—with unprecedented precision and quality, significantly cutting down on manufacturing costs and production time.

The decision to use 3D printing came from the need to bring more agility and flexibility to the development of our products. It allows rapid prototyping of complex components that previously required much more time and resources. Previously, we relied heavily on machining and building physical models, which honestly slowed down the development cycle. With 3D printing, not only have we accelerated this process, but we have also significantly reduced the associated costs.

Why INTAMSYS 3D Printer?

Products like ATMs, smart safes, and kiosks are designed with "security and reliability" as the top priorities. Given these high standards, Diebold Nixdorf places particular importance on the industrial-grade performance and reliability of its production partners and technologies. Their partnership with INTAMSYS was based on a shared commitment to quality and performance. The 3D printing solutions provided by INTAMSYS, especially the FUNMAT PRO 610HT, not only met Diebold’s strict requirements for precision and quality but also ensured reliable, industrial-grade performance through its ability to run continuously in demanding production environments.

Additionally, the 610HT ensures that even complex geometries achieve high-quality surface finishes, enabling Diebold to achieve the fine detail required for injection-molded parts with smooth surfaces, meeting the specifications for their projects. The millimeter-level precision ensures that parts not only look perfect but also meet functional strength requirements.

When it comes to material selection, the 610HT’s versatility is key. It supports printing with proprietary materials like PEEK, PEI, ABS and PC, and its open filament system allows the use of third-party materials, making it stand out from other 3D printers that only support specific materials.

ABS is our material of choice most of the time for its strength and ease of use. However, we are always evaluating other materials that can meet the needs of each project. This is the advantage of the FUNMAT PRO 610HT, it is a machine that accepts a wide range of materials.

The 610HT’s broad printing capabilities meet Diebold’s need for parts of various sizes. Many of Diebold’s products, such as ATM front panels, require larger print volumes. With a build size of 610 x 508 x 508 mm, the 610HT can print most parts in a single run, eliminating the need for assembly steps that other printers might require. This improves production efficiency and ensures consistency in the final parts.

After thorough research and benchmarking, WEERG chose INTAMSYS as their supplier. The INTAMSYS FUNMAT PRO 410 met all their requirements with features like a heated chamber, dual heated nozzles, and a heated filament chamber.

INTAMSYS offered one single solution that got it all:

  • A robust printer with a sleek aesthetic finish, heated chamber, dual heated nozzles, and heated filament chamber.
  • Free and user-friendly software with incorporated printing settings (Click and Print experience) for a wide range of materials (from PA12-CF to PEEK).
  • Reliable support, and most importantly for WEERG, honesty and a true partnership.
WEERG also appreciated the user-friendly software with incorporated printing settings and the reliable support from INTAMSYS.

They went for INTAMSYS and received their FUNMAT PRO 610HT in June 2021. Since the purchase of the printer, they have printed many prototypes, some end-use parts, and from time to time jigs/fixtures and tooling parts.

As the printer has a high chamber temperature (up to 300°C), it also means that all temperatures in between are covered too. 4D Concepts has printed out parts of many plastic types; from PLA, ABS, PC, to PAEK, PEEK, PEI 9085/1010.

Tank Holder

The tank holder is a new part in this year´s racing car. The part is printed on the FUNMAT PRO 610HT with the material choice of ABS. For the driverless disciplines, the team uses pressurized air to activate the brakes in an emergency. This year, they changed the concept of how pressurized air is stored, which required a new mounting solution. The tank holder is designed to solve this challenge.

Flap Ribs (2)

Flap Ribs

Other 3D printed parts, using the FUNMAT PRO 610HT and PC material, are the flap ribs that play a crucial role in the construction of the car’s side wing. These ribs are glued into the carbon-fiber shells and incorporate threaded inserts for attaching the wing to the chassis.

While the team has used these ribs for years, they have redesigned for this season to accommodate changes in the aerodynamic shape of the wings. Using INTAMSUITE™ NEO and the 3D printing technology, they conducted topology optimization to achieve the lightest possible geometry, resulting in an organic shape that would not be possible to manufacture by milling.

After four years of use and validation, Diebold has praised the success of integrating 3D printing into their R&D and production processes. The company highlights that additive manufacturing has played a critical role in improving competitiveness and stability, especially when dealing with tight deadlines. According to Diebold, the continuous printing capabilities of the FUNMAT PRO 610HT have solidified their leadership position within the industry.

INTAMSYS is committed to helping customers across various sectors accelerate product development with high-ROI, industrial-grade 3D printing solutions that enhance market competitiveness. Moving forward, INTAMSYS will continue advancing 3D printing technology, bringing transformative capabilities to more industries.
